New York – Peanut butter company, Skippy, has offered to recall its products because of a potential salmonella bacteria contamination.
Skippy parent company, Uniliver, ordered the recall of their Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy peanut butter product and their Super Chunk peanut butter products.
The statement from Uniliver revealed that a routine test by their peanut butter plant inspectors discovered that there might have been salmonella bacteria contamination of these products.
According to the statement, Uniliver is working on finding the source of the bacteria.
Skippy is being aided by the United states Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to ensure a smooth recall.
The recall affects a number of states including Delaware, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Virginia, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, Iowa, Maine and Arkansas.
Some 142,000 reported Americans are infected with the Salmonella bacteria each year mainly from chicken eggs. There is a reported 30 fatalities each year.
The peanut butter products affected by the recall consists of products with UPC codes of 048001006812 or 048001006782. It also bears product expiration date of 16th May 2012 to 21st May 2012.
The press release asks the public not to consume these products if they come across them.
