He didn’t read a book until he was 31, then a diagnosis led him to inspire kids with similar struggles.

Henry Winkler, best known for his iconic role as The Fonz on Happy Days, has a life story that’s as inspiring as it is surprising.

Despite his charm and talent, Winkler faced enormous challenges growing up. He struggled with reading and schoolwork, often being dismissed as “lazy” or “not applying himself.” What few knew at the time was that he was battling undiagnosed dyslexia.

He didn’t finish reading a book until the age of 31. It wasn’t until much later that doctors confirmed what he had suspected all along—his lifelong struggles were the result of dyslexia.

Instead of letting this hold him back, Winkler turned his diagnosis into a mission. He began writing children’s books centered on characters who face learning challenges, helping kids see that they are not alone. His Hank Zipzer book series, based on his own experiences, has inspired countless children around the world.

Henry Winkler’s story is a reminder that success doesn’t come from having it easy—it comes from perseverance, resilience, and turning obstacles into opportunities.

Today, he continues to act, write, and speak out for children facing learning differences, showing that what once felt like his greatest weakness became the source of his greatest impact.
