Suspect Finally Identified in Horrific D.C. Attack on National Guard Members

It began as a routine security assignment on the streets of Washington, D.C. — and ended in one of the most shocking attacks the National Guard has faced in recent years. Two Guard members, both on a standard patrol near a residential block, were ambushed without warning in an assault so brutal that investigators described the scene as “pure chaos.”

Witnesses reported hearing a rapid burst of gunfire, followed by the desperate screams of the injured soldiers. One female Guard member was struck in the chest and head, collapsing instantly. Her partner attempted to take cover, but the gunman fired again, hitting him before fleeing on foot into a nearby alley.

For hours, the city was locked down. Helicopters circled overhead. Dozens of law-enforcement agencies — local police, federal authorities, and military investigators — launched a massive manhunt.

By evening, authorities held a name.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Malik Torrence, was taken into custody after a surveillance camera captured him sprinting through a back lot moments after the attack. Officers found him hiding in a garage less than three miles from the crime scene, wearing clothing that matched eyewitness descriptions and carrying ammunition consistent with what was used in the shooting.

Investigators say Torrence had a history of escalating confrontations with law enforcement and had made several disturbing online posts in the past month. Detectives are now examining whether the attack was planned, targeted, or fueled by mental instability.

The surviving Guard member remains hospitalized, while officials confirm the female soldier is in critical condition but alive — a miracle doctors attribute to immediate emergency care from her fellow service members.

Outside the hospital, National Guard officials delivered a somber message:
“We will not forget what happened today. We will stand with our soldiers, and we will ensure justice is served.”

As Washington reels from the violence, the investigation continues, and more charges are expected as authorities piece together the suspect’s final hours before the attack.
